The History of the Acapulco Chair
December 7, 2021

THE BEGINNINGS OF THE ACAPULCO CHAIR, A MYTH

Many myths and stories surround the creation of the original Acapulco Chair. The most popular is that a French tourist wanted to build a chair and hammock mix in the 1950s. A story that we personally don't necessarily want to believe. The fact is that the beginnings of the original Acapulco Chair are subordinate to this period. A time when Acapulco was a jet set destination for American celebrities. A time when air travel was very exclusive and expensive. Elvis was there regularly, Brigitte Bardot probably too, as were Frank Sinatra and the Kennedys.

The most charming story about the creation of the Acapulco Chair that we have ever heard was that in those days in Acapulco, the bread ordered was distributed in baskets to the customers. The baskets were very reminiscent of the shape of the seat shell of the Acapulco Chair. A baker was lucky enough to have a furniture maker as a friend and the idea of combining the two elements and thus the Acapulco Chair was born. It is indeed very amusing to read, whether you want to believe it is up to you. The actual history of the original Acapulco Chair is arguably more complex. We know from our own experience how intensive the development of a new design is. From the first steps of inspiration to a finished product, it often takes 2-3 years, sometimes even more. At Acapulco Design, we firmly believe that the Acapulco Chair was inspired by shapes and patterns found in Mexican culture and nature. The following photos should illustrate this.

THE ACAPULCO CHAIR AND ITS FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

A very clear vision of Acapulco Design is to further develop the original design of the Acapulco Chair. This does not happen by chance, but in a strong examination of the original design and discussions with top designers. For example, when we developed our AD-1 and AD-4 dining chair models in cooperation with HANSANDFRANZ . We are currently working flat out on a dining table that we will be presenting at the IMM in January 2021. This is designed byOlivia Herms , who worked for Konstantin Grcic for over 10 years. The design is still top secret, but you can look forward to the new model in January at the latest. Until then, have fun with the following pictures. Let yourself be inspired!
